The War area of the Mid Atlantic Popular/American Culture Conference, October 27-29, 2006 in Baltimore MD is soliciting paper proposals.
War has been waged throughout history for good reason and for no reason. This area seeks papers that explore the various ways war has impacted upon social, economic, technological, ideological and other aspects of culture.
Special Topic for 2006: Popular Visions of the War on Terror
For this panel, we welcome papers that examine popular representations/investigations of the Bush administrations "War on Terror" and the war in Iraq. Papers can examine direct interrogations of these "wars" or representations that more indirectly comment on these "wars" (e.g., films like V for Vendetta, recent comic book storylines, recent television programs depicting covert efforts to prevent terrorism, Showtime's Masters of Horror film "The Homecoming," news coverage, etc.).
If you are interested in proposing a paper, please contact A. Schopp at the addresses below. ALL PROPOSALS ARE DUE BY JUNE 15, 2006. Proposals should be 250-300 word abstracts. Please indicate if you are proposing papers to more than one area. MAPACA rules stipulate that you may only present one paper at the conference.
If you are interested in other areas, and/or if you want more information about the conference, please go to the Gazette, our online newsletter.
