DEADLINE EXTENDED!!!!

Interdisciplinary Student and Graduate Conference

Transcultural Media Relations –
Literature, Film, TV show adaptations and beyond

April 17th – 18th 2015: Goethe University Frankfurt am Main

In the introduction to his 2011 book Media, Culture and Society, Paul Hodkinson claims that "media have, in one way or another, become integral to what we might term the broader social and cultural environment – something that includes (…) class, gender and ethnic
relations, patterns of identity and community, ideas and nderstandings, practices of intellectual, artistic and creative expression and broader ways of life" (4). Media - and this includes novels, newspapers, film, TV productions, music and computer games – shape, mirror and represent culture and society. What then happens when a medium is taken out of its cultural frame and reinterpreted through another culture's eyes?

This conference seeks to explore the connections between media and culture and is especially interested in papers and presentations about transcultural media representations,be it Elementary, the American TV show interpretation of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, the Bollywood adaption of Pride and Prejudice, transcultural films reinterpreting local culture and history or one of the many post-colonial novels dealing with questions of identity, nationality and culture between the former colonies and the British empire.

We invite all senior BA students as well as Master and Graduate Students in English, American Studies, Film and Media Studies, and Cultural Studies to send in their proposal for a 20 minute presentation about any chosen topic referring to transcultural media relations.

Potential topics could include but are not limited to:

o adaptations and interpretations of novels or other media in different cultures
o cultural stereotypes and representations in literature, film or other media
o cultural media practices and cultural media memory
o international or transnational media projects in film, TV, music or literature
o questions of cultural identity in media representations
