Call For Papers:
"History" and Its Discontents: Tenth Annual History and Theory Graduate
Conference
University of California, Irvine
April 13-14, 2007

Graduate students are invited to submit paper proposals on any historical
topic for the Tenth Annual University of California, Irvine History and
Theory Graduate Conference to be held April 13-14, 2007. The conference
will have an interdisciplinary focus with an overall objective of
examining the current practices and uses of history. The conference will
not be confined to "historians" but rather will be inclusive of all
graduate students that use "history" in their work or who write from a
"historical" perspective. The conference will also take up issues and
ideas raised by the current encounters between "theory" and history-such
as critical theory, cultural studies, feminism, queer theory, and
post-colonial studies, among others. By examining the usefulness of
different methodological and theoretical approaches to the study of the
past, and as practiced across various disciplinary fields, the conference
will explore the ways in which these different approaches have reshaped
historical inquiry.

Possible avenues of investigation for paper submissions include, but are
not limited to, the following subjects:

* world history
* post-colonial history
* gender history
* cultural history
* public history
* histories of power or social control
* the history of a specific space
* the history of an idea
* social history
* art history
* literary history
* historiography
* the history of science and medicine
 history and memory
* economic history
* comparative history
* narratives and counter-narratives of nationalism
* histories of marginalized communities

Papers addressing other "historical" topics are also encouraged.

All proposals should include an abstract (100 to 200 words in length), a
one page CV, and an accompanying cover letter. Panel proposals should
include a one-page panel statement, a list of participants, individual
paper proposals, and CVs for each panel participant. Please submit
applications by January 15, 2007 to:
