Call for papers: Irish Studies

for a roundtable discussion of nostalgia, memory, and the preservation of
culture in Irish and Irish-American communities. Currently, Irish Studies of
the Republic, of the North, and of the Irish diaspora, have examined the
ways in which nostalgia or memory have influenced the way communities
preserve Irish culture. Projects as diverse and controversial as the Field
Day anthologies of Irish writers to the digitalizing of the Ulster Covenant
and the continuing efforts of folklorists and anthropologists to preserve
songs and ballads have placed one focus in Irish studies squarely on
critical questions of preservation, restoration, and the politics of
remembrance. I am looking to focus a roundtable discussion at NEMLA in Irish
studies that goes beyond the typical focus on Joyce, Yeats and company.
Papers--whether literary, historical, anthropological, interdisciplinary
etc--that examine any aspect of preservation, transmission, remembrance of
culture are welcome. Participants may choose from a broad range of ideas,
from the immigrant/emigrant experience as reflected in the Irish diaspora to
the digitalized preservation of records (such as the Ulster Covenant Project
or the digital archiving of folk music). If participants agree, I would
like to post the papers on my website to be read ahead of time so that the
panel can open up to a short presentation of each paper and a real
discussion of the issues in the papers. Should participants decide not to do
this, we will not post them but run this as a regular panel of paper
readings.

Proposals/ abstracts (or full papers) should be sent as word or rtf
attachments to Maryanne Felter: felterma_at_cayuga-cc.edu
