Call for Papers
Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Italian Studies
  University of Trieste, Italy
  June 29 - July 3, 2007

  "Bridging Communities"

For the first time since the Canadian Society for Italian Studies was founded in 1972, the annual conference, normally held together with those of the other eighty associations that constitute the Canadian Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences, will be held independently and outside Canada, namely at the University of Trieste, Italy.

As is customary, proposals are sought for papers on all aspects of Italian literature (including travel literature), cinema, language, linguistics (including dialectology), and the teaching of all these, as well as Italian Canadian history and culture. Given the location of our conference in Trieste, special sessions are favoured on the transnational literature of boundaries and the relations between Friuli-Venezia Giulia or Istria and Canada. A session on Umberto Saba to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death is also planned. In keeping with the 2007 Congress of the Canadian Federation, the overall theme at the Trieste conference is "Bridging Communities".

Proposals for 20-minute presentations should include a title, 150-word abstract, and name and address of the speaker(s). They should be e-mailed by February 1, 2007 to the Canadian conference organizers, Olga Pugliese (pugliese_at_chass.utoronto.ca) and
Konrad Eisenbichler (konrad.eisenbichler_at_utoronto.ca). (Offers to chair sessions are also welcome.)

N.B. All participants at the Trieste conference must
  1) be members of the Canadian Society for Italian Studies (see our website: www.uwo.ca/modlang/italian/CSIS/index.htm) and
  2) register for the conference (fee: 50 Canadian dollars or 30 Euro).
Membership and registration fees, payable to the Canadian Society for Italian Studies, should be mailed to the CSIS Secretary-Treasurer, Prof. Sandra Parmegiani, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, The University of Western Ontario, UC 260, London, Ontario, Canada N6A 3K7.

  Special information:
  a) CSIS members receive copies of the official journal of the association, Quaderni d'italianistica, which is published twice annually.
  b) The conference will include a special keynote address by an Italian writer and visits to near-by places of historical and cultural interest such as (tentatively) Cividale, Aquileia, and Pola (Croatia). During the conference, on July 1st to be exact, there are plans to celebrate Canada Day.

  Organizing Committee:
Prof. Elvio Guagnini and Prof. Rienzo Pellegrini of the University of Trieste; and
Prof. Konrad Eisenbichler and Prof. Olga Zorzi Pugliese of the University of Toronto.
