Despite the increasing acceptance of LBGT/Q studies within academia, =
much of the research within this field centers on late Victorian society =
and post-Wildean articulations of gender and sexuality. However, =
scholars in earlier periods (Bray, Halperin, Trumbach, Haggerty, =
Elfenbein, Lacquer) have begun to identify alternative sexual =
communities before what may be loosely termed the Foucaultian divide. =20

In an effort to stimulate scholarship on the history of sexuality, this =
panel welcomes papers exploring literary representations of queer =
genders, bodies, and sexualities during the period preceding the genesis =
of the term "homosexuality" (roughly 1780-1870). Suggested topics =
include

Sensibility and/as sexuality

Eroticism and the Oriental tale

Homoeroticism in/and colonialism

Excessive desires and drives

Consumption and orality

Masculine women, effeminate men, and/or hermaphrodism

Representations of the monstrous, the unnatural, and the unspeakable

Queer subcultures, queer bodies

Disciplinary mechanisms and sites of resistance

Cross-dressing, fetishism, sadism, masochism, and onanism in the period=20

Historical, medical, legal, and religious discourses on sodomy and other =
queer expressions of desire
