"Louis XI a controversial figure"
Université de Lille 3
Campus Pont de Bois
Equipe d'accueil ALITHILA
4th-5th-6th oct. 2007
During the past few years, the sections of comparative and medieval studies in
the University of Lille 3 have been studying together how historical or
literary figures are received and transmitted to the later generations,  i.e.
the reception of Antiquity, of Virgil from the Middle-Ages to the XXth
century, the posterity of the Renaissance. Persuing the same aim, we would
like to focus our attention on the figure of Louis XI.
Since Paul M. Kendall, Jean Dufournet and Joël Blanchard and their analysis of
Commyne's work, Louis XI has a very controversial image. To this day, the
"universelle araigne" has been popularized  through many films, comic books
and novels.  Because  of his conception of Power, the French king inspired
many political thinkers and historians  on the eve of the French Revolution
and many decades after the traumatic event, playing the part of a model or of
an antimodel.
We wish to invite researchers from various fields (i.e. historical studies,
media studies, comparative and cultural studies). Our aim is to encourage a
multidisciplinary approach.

Please direct your proposal and a short c.v. to Prof. Marie-Madeleine
Castellani < marie-madeleine.castellani_at_univ-lille3.fr > or to Dr. Fiona
McIntosh-Varjabédian <fiona.mcintosh_at_wanadoo.fr> before the 1st nov. 2006.
