CFP: [18th] Midwest American Society for 18th-Century Studies, Oklahoma City October 9-12 2008
Panel and paper proposals for the 2008 MWASECS conference should be sent
to Susan Spencer, Department of English, University of Central Oklahoma,
Edmond OK 73034-0184, sspencer_at_ucok.edu. The deadline for proposed
panels is April 1. The deadline for individual papers and complete
panels is May 1.
The conference theme is "The Innovative Eighteenth Century."
Our conference hotel will be the historic Skirvin Hilton, a spectacular
Art Deco edifice that has housed cattle barons, movie stars, and a
sexually voracious ghost named Effie.
Planned events include an opera presentation and cocktails on the roof of
the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, which will feature a two-floor
exhibition of Roman Art from the Louvre. Organized by the American
Federation of Arts and the Musée du Louvre, this traveling exhibit
represents the largest number of loaned pieces from the Louvre for any
single show, and the OKCMOA will be one of only three U.S. venues.
We will also tour the grounds of the Oklahoma City National Memorial and
enjoy a banquet at the top of the exclusive Petroleum Club, the highest
building in the city and the favored haunt of high rollers in the oil and
gas business. The plenary speaker will be Richard Serrano of Rutgers
University, who will speak on "Ancient Feelings & Incomplete Journeys: A
Chinese Woman Poet at the End of the Eighteenth Century."
