"Spaces of War," ASECS, Richmond, Virginia, March 26-29, 2009

This panel hopes to bring together two areas of inquiry that have aroused
recent critical interest: the role of war in British culture in the long
eighteenth century and the representation of space in literature and other
arts. This panel hopes to extend our thinking about both space and war by
examining their intersections in British fiction, poetry, drama,
nonfiction, or the visual arts. Among other things, papers might examine
the function of space in fictional representations of combat; the problem
of representing war on the stage; the effect of military infrastructure on
writings about English, British, European, or colonial geographies; or
spaces inhabited or invaded by soldiers, officers, or veterans.

Interdisciplinary approaches are very much welcome. One-page proposals for
fifteen-minute papers are solicited.
