CFP: [18th] SCMLA 2009 Irish Literature Session
Submissions are currently being accepted for the Irish Literature session
of the 66th annual South Central Modern Language Association conference,
October 29th through the 31st in Baton Rouge, LA.
The title of the 2009 Irish Literature session is â€œRupture and Rebirth in
Irish Literature and Culture.â€ In keeping with the conference theme of
â€œContinuity and Displacements,â€ this session welcomes papers that focus on
representations of national, cultural, personal, or linguistic rupture and
rebuilding/rebirth in Irish literature of any time period or genre.
Sample paper topics might include, but are not limited to:
--Literary representations of post-disaster reconciliation or rebuilding on
an interpersonal or structural level
--Literary or cultural manifestations of the politics of rebuilding, in
monument construction, naming of landmarks, the role of the Church,
economic issues, etc.
--Examinations of the role of the Irish language in literary or cultural
movements, especially sites of mutual exchange between Irish and English
language texts or authors
--Family politics and intergenerational reconstruction of relationships or
--Religious or secular â€œepiphaniesâ€ and their aftermath in literature or
--Breakdowns and reconstructions of gender identity in literature, film,
