Violence, War and Trauma in the Age of Defoe

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in military matters
in the Restoration and early eighteenth century. Defoe is a central
figure in the production and dissemination of both fictional and
journalistic texts on war in this period. To have the greatest impact
on his contemporaries, Defoe found it necessary to reimagine and
reshape the martial discourses he inherited from earlier writers. This
panel is interested in studying both the context in which Defoe's work
on war emerged and the way in which Defoe responded to earlier
representations of warfare. As such, we welcome papers that study the
discourses of war circulated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries,
both those centered on the work of Defoe itself and those that highlight
the way his predecessors and contemporaries envisioned the trauma and
glory of combat.
