Call for Papers

The Journal of Caribbean Literatures (JCLs) is the peer reviewed journal of
literature and culture of the entire Caribbean. Subscriptions and sample
issues are available at www.jcls.net.

Aware of the growing importance of the newly expanding field of Caribbean
Studies, JCLs seeks quality submissions for its forthcoming special
pioneering double issue on Caribbean literatures in Dutch and Papiamentu
from the Leeward Islands:

Literatures of Aruba, Bonaire and Cura=E7ao
Guest Editors: Olga Elaine Rojer, American University, and Joseph O.
Aimone, Santa Clara University

We seek critical arguments from a variety of perspectives, interviews with
authors of the Islands, and fresh translations into English of significant
works of literature originally written in Dutch or Papiamentu from Aruba,
Bonaire and Cura=E7ao. Topics of interest, as connected with the three
islands, include:
    * Tensions in the Cultural Mosaic
    * Race and Deracination
    * Leeward Legacies
    * Colonial vs. Post-Colonial
    * Spiritual Alienation and the Vexed Drama of Polyglot Religion
    * The Resorts of Language
    * Techniques and Themes of Voice
    * Expatriation and Exilic Phenomena
    * Papiamentu and the Popular
    * Comparative Caribbeanism
    * Relations and Relationships in Dutch Worldwide
    * Governing Language: Papiamentu vs. Dutch
    * Conjurations in Literature, Language and Culture
All critical essays must be wholly in English, in MLA style. (Passages
originally in Dutch and Papiamentu must be accompanied by translation.)

For critical essays, send abstracts ONLY, and ASAP, 1000 words maximum, in
duplicate, by electronic mail, IN THE BODY OF THE MESSAGE. No attachments
will be opened. Tentative Deadline: July 1, 2003. Papers requested on the
basis of abstracts will be needed by January 2004.

For translations and interviews, send query letter by email.
