Teaching Across the Americas: Approaches, Problems, and Resources
Editors: Rodrigo Lazo and Gretchen Murphy
Deadline for Abstracts: October 1, 2003

Comparative scholarship in the last decade has crossed the disciplinary
divide between the study of U.S. and Latin American literatures and
cultures. José David Saldívar, Doris Sommer, and Kirsten Silva Gruesz,
among many others, have invigorated cross-disciplinary approaches to the
study of the Americas. Inter-American approaches have also been influenced
by the rise of cultural studies, a growing interest in globalization, a
shift toward the "border" as an epistemological and interdisciplinary
concept, and the development of Latino/a studies in its transnational
dimensions. This collection will explore how scholars have transferred to
the classroom the study of literature and culture in the Americas. Among
questions of interest: What are the grounds for/of comparison in a
classroom? How do you integrate questions of translation, language
difference and bilingualism? How do one or more theoretical approaches
influence syllabus construction? How do you teach the relationship of
history to literature and other forms of culture? How do you bring forth
the role of U.S. imperialism in the Americas? We seek short essays (10-15
pages) from scholars working in a variety of disciplines and
interdisciplinary areas. These essays could discuss approaches, challenges,
and textual comparisons, among other topics. We also seek syllabi or
assignments with a brief overview of how they worked in a particular
institutional setting.

Please submit a one-page abstract describing your essay, syllabus or
assignment and a two-page CV. For more information, contact one of the
editors by e-mail. You can submit an abstract by postal mail or e-mail.
Deadline: October 1, 2003.
