PASSAGES ON THE RIVERS OF AMERICAN LITERATURE

>From the Mississippi of Melville's confidence men and Mark Twain's Huck and
Jim to the Riverworld of Philip Jose Farmer, rivers and travel on rivers have
played an important role in American literature. The "Passages on the
Rivers of American Literature" panel at the 2008 College English
Association seeks
papers dealing with any aspects of riparian life and travel in American
literature, whether fiction, poetry, or other genres. Papers dealing with
race and
gender, ecocritical approaches, fantasy and science fiction, or
noncanonical texts from any period are particularly welcome. The
conference will be held
in St. Louis, Missouri, March 27-29, 2007.

Please send 500-word abstracts no later than November 1 to
