Expressions of a Different Understanding:The Intersection of Gender, Race,
and Ethnicity in Multiethnic Multiracial America

2008 NATIONAL POPULAR CULTURE AND AMERICAN CULTURE ASSOCIATIONS’ JOINT
CONFERENCE (PCA/ACA)

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: NOVEMBER 30, 2007

The 2008 National PCA/ACA Conference will be held at the San Francisco
Marriott Hotel from Wednesday, March 19, through Saturday, March 22.

Literature & Politics Sessions, American Culture Association

This panel seeks papers related to the intersections of gender and race in
the modern and contemporary literature of multiethnic and multiracial
America including poetry, novels, narratives and other literary forms.
Specifically, how the performance of “the self” is represented in
literature and culture as a form of expressionism that may coincide or
conflict with Modernist experimentalism; and particularly how multiethnic
communities struggle for a unique self-representation as sometimes a
“different understanding” beyond the given parameters of artistic style
perhaps as a form of politico-cultural strategic essentialism to circumvent
trespass.

(The multiracial narrative is of particular interest-with multiracial
studies as one of the most controversial and rapidly expanding areas within
ethnic studies altogether).
