Essay Collection on Trauma, Illness, & Disability in Ethnic American
Literature

Call for Papers for Volume entitled "Metaphors of Illness: Perspectives
on Ethnic American Literature"

This book project entitled “Metaphors of Illness: Perspectives on
Ethnic American Literature” will focus on literary representations of
illness, disability, and trauma as complex and productive metaphors for
American experience. Drawing on the literary connections made between
race, ethnicity, disease, and place in contemporary transnational Ethnic
American Literature, this volume of critical essays will be a significant
contribution to multiple disciplines, from Literary Studies to American
Studies, from Cultural Theory to Disability and Trauma Studies. Literary
tropes of multiple pathologies of the body invite us to reflect upon
bodily conditions and behaviors that mark out the boundaries of the
individual, the social, and the national (as well as their
transgressions). Furthermore, migration, displacement, and mobility have
had great impact on Americans lives. Ethnic American texts bare a
special burden in negotiating the cultural tension of modern migrancy in
racial, gendered, and sexualized terms. How is migration and
displacement written on the body? This collection of critical essays
will explore the literary connections made between race, ethnicity,
disease, and place. These connections are indeed both complicated and
provocative in contemporary transnational Ethnic American Literature.
