The English Eye/I: Documentary in England, 1930-1960

This essay collection will examine the relationships between documentary
writing/film and art, forms of representation, culture, and national identity.
Possible topics may include:

-- Documentary writings of the Depression (the work of George Orwell, or lesser
known documentary writers, for
-- the Mass Observation movement
-- Theories about documentary (John Grierson, Storm Jameson)
-- Documentary films of the 40s and 50s
-- Documentary and the Spanish Civil War, Second World War
-- the connection between documentary filmmaking and the British New Wave
(directors such as Karel Reisz)
-- the relationship between literary or artistic subjectivity or the
construction of British/English national identity and documentary
-- questions of "high" culture, "low" culture": is documentary "art"?

Completed essays of 5-6000 words should be submitted by Monday 1 September as
email attachments (in Word format, using MLA referencing conventions).
