CALL FOR PAPERS
“Elizabeth Stoddard and Nineteenth-Century Literary Culture”
American Literature Association Conference
May 25-28, 2006
Hyatt Regency San Francisco in Embarcadero Center

This panel will explore the connections between Elizabeth Stoddard and
the broader literary culture of nineteenth-century America. Papers on
any aspects of her connection to that culture—biographical, literary,
aesthetic, thematic—are welcome. We especially seek papers that do not
exclusively engage with Stoddard’s work alone, but consider her within a
broader context.

Possible topics include:
*Stoddard’s reaction to domesticity or sentimentalism
*Stoddard’s participation in New York salon culture
*Thematic concerns Stoddard shared with other authors of the period,
such as women’s development, New England Calvinism, or exoticism
*Stoddard as a literary realist
*Stoddard’s interactions and disagreements with the Genteel Poets
*Stoddard’s relationship with male critics, including Lowell, Stedman,
or Howells
*Influences on Stoddard (American or transatlantic)

Please send abstracts in the text of e-mails (no attachments, please) by
January 10 to Elizabeth Stockton at estockto_at_email.unc.edu.
