CFP: Film and Contemporary Art / Stan Douglas
Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference 2006
Vancouver, March 2-5, 2006

Since the 1960s- and more dramatically within the past decade-
contemporary artists have been working in with the moving image, and
film and video works have increasingly found audiences within art
galleries and museums. How do we want to theorize the increasingly
dynamic field of contemporary time-based art within film and media
studies? What is the relationship of these works – and the
discipline of film and media studies – to contemporary art history,
and vice versa? What are the kinds of aesthetic, social, cultural,
and political issues we want to address within contemporary film art,
and through what kinds of critical rhetoric can these questions be
most successfully framed? How might contemporary film art invite us
to reevaluate film theorical models originally developed for the
deconstruction of mainstream commercial media?

Submissions dealing with the films of internationally-known,
Vancouver-based artist Stan Douglas would be especially appreciated.
