CFP: Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature and Film (3/1/06; RMMLA, 10/12/06-10/14/06)full name / name of organization: Joseph Brown contact email: jbrow85@lsu.edu Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association (RMMLA) Annual Convention The RMMLA panel on Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature and Film invites submissions for its session titled "The Frontier in Science Fiction and Fantasy." How has the American West, and specifically the historical fact of the opening and closing of the frontier, influenced SF and Fantasy literature and film? With its having been roughly forty years since Gene Roddenberry, the legendary creator of STAR TREK, began production on his "Wagon Train to the Stars," which famously explored the "final frontier," this year's panel seeks paper submissions that interrogate conceptions and influences of the frontier on SF and Fantasy. To what extent are these two genres indebted to the themes of discovery, exploration, exploitation, civilization, and savagery?
