CFP for the 2007 Northeast American Society for Eighteenth-Century
Studies Conference to be held October 25-28, 2007 at Dartmouth College.
The conference theme is "Transatlantic Destinies: Connections and
Disconnections across the Atlantic Seaboard in the Eighteenth Century."

_Traveling Songs: Lyric in the Transatlantic Eighteenth Century_

This panel examines the changing role of the lyric in the early Atlantic
world. To that end, it solicits papers on poems from the long eighteenth
century that explicitly address transatlantic travel. This category of
poetry is broadly conceived: papers on lyrics about the transatlantic
journey are welcomed (Wheatley’s “On Being Brought from Africa to
America” and Freneau’s “On the Emigration to America,” for example), in
addition to contributions that examine songs that travel themselves
(such as ballads and Psalm translations), as well as papers on poems
that deal with the idea of transatlantic travel and imperialism in
satirical or sentimental ways, including works by Dryden, Pope, and
Oliver Goldsmith. Ultimately, this panel will explore how contextualized
close-readings of poetry can help us understand larger cultural
developments in the transatlantic eighteenth century.
