>From the 1920s, early health and safety films closely paralleled documentary filmmaking; engaging in fictional and non-fictional narratives of public bodies and national identities. In the postwar era these films, generally government funded, popularized ideals of world health. Visual representations depicted, often scientifically, cultures degrading morality, racial impurity, or sexual degeneracy as being responsible for the spread of disease. The cinema of hygiene and injury has fed anxious populations who embraced alien invasions and feared invisible contaminants. Public health and safety films continue to evolve from this matrix of subtly changing cultural boundaries, shifting sexual identities, and ever growing global incursions into the private sphere of the public body.
We are inviting submissions on all aspects of public health and safety as it relates to the documentary tradition. Deadline for submission is August 15, 2006.
The Film and History League conference details can be found at www.filmandhistory.org. The meeting will run from 8-12 November, 2006 in the Dolce Conference Center near the DFW airport. A spectrum of other areas will evolve on the web site over time.
