"The Documentary Tradition"

Recognizing both the motivating power of film and the technical
prowess of the Hollywood film industry, military and civilian leaders
made documentary film an integral part of the U. S. war effort in
World War II. Wartime documentaries served myriad purposes, among
them indoctrination, training, reportage, and commemoration. After
the war, wartime documentary footage became a staple of television
documentaries and feature films about the war

This call for papers seeks proposals for individual papers or
complete sessions (3-4 papers) on any aspect of documentary films
dealing with the United States in World War II . Possible topics
include, but are not limited to:

· Specific wartime documentaries (e.g. Memphis Belle)

· Specific postwar documentaries (e.g. Victory at Sea)

· Documentaries as propaganda (e.g. the Why We Fight series)

· The uses of WWII documentary footage in dramatic films

· Images of The Enemy

· Images of women and/or minorities

· Images of American soldiers (as individuals or idealized figures
“The GI”)

· Documentaries’ treatment of dead, injured, or defeated American
troops

· The dynamics of filmmaker/military cooperation

· Distribution of, viewing of, and audience reactions to wartime
documentaries

· Retrospective and anniversary treatments of wartime events

The Film and History League will hold its biennial meeting on 8-12
November at the Dolce Conference Center near the Dallas-Fort Worth
(DFW) airport in Texas. The theme will be "The Documentary
Tradition," and filmmakers D. A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus will be
among the featured speakers. Full details on the meeting, including
