"The Documentary Tradition" Dallas 8-12 November 2006

AREA: Silent Film

"Silent film" covers a vast terrain, from early cinema to the "transitional
period" (1908 - 1917) to the "late silent" era. During this formative time,
the term "documentary" was coined and a vast number of forms, from
actualities to city symphonies to travelogues and feature-length
documentaries, were a regular part of an evening's entertainment in
vaudeville and movie theaters and other venues.

This area seeks panels and individual submissions on all aspects of silent
era documentaries, including but definitely not limited to:

- Individual Films

- Filmmakers (Flaherty, Vertov, Cooper, Strand, etc.)

- City symphonies

- Travelogues

- Actualities

- Ethnography

- Silent era exhibition and distribution

- Depictions of national identity, race, ethnicity, gender and/or
sexuality

- Issues related to authenticity

- "Cinema of Attractions"

- Audiences

- Music utilized for silent documentary film exhibition

- Marketing of documentaries to audiences and the industry

- Illustrated lectures and lecturers

- The production (and/or exhibition) of documentary films in a
specific country or region

Deadline for submission is July 25, 2006.

The Film and History League conference details can be found at
www.filmandhistory.org. The meeting will run from 8-12 November, 2006 in the
Dolce Conference Center near the DFW airport. A spectrum of other areas will
evolve on the web site over time.
