AREA: The Newsreel

Despite its integral role in shaping (inter)national debates, and its
presence in motion picture theaters for over half a century, the newsreel
has often received scant scholarly attention. But from its depictions of
war, politics, poverty, race, gender, and every other facet of life to its
presence in motion picture theaters and newsreel-only venues, the newsreel
was an indelible part of the motion picture experience.

This area seeks panels and individual submissions on all aspects of the
newsreel, including but definitely not limited to:

- Newsreel depictions of national identity, race, ethnicity, gender,
and/or sexuality

- Representations of events/issues/individuals

- The production (and/or exhibition) of newsreels in a specific
country or region

- Issues related to authenticity in newsreels

- Censorship

- Examinations of newsreel companies, producers, camera operators

- Newsreel distribution and/or exhibition

- Wartime newsreels

- Politics and the newsreel

- Newsreel distribution to television

- Fox Movietone News, Hearst Metrotone News, etc.

- Music utilized in newsreel production and/or exhibition

- Newsreel reporting of entertainment, sports and other events

Deadline for submission is July 25, 2006.

The Film and History League conference details can be found at
www.filmandhistory.org. The meeting will run from 8-12 November, 2006 in the
Dolce Conference Center near the DFW airport. A spectrum of other areas will
evolve on the web site over time.
