Call for Papers

2006 Film and History League Conference
November 8-12, 2006
Dolce Convention Center (Dallas, TX)

AREA: John Grierson
DEADLINE: July 20, 2006

John Grierson (1898-1972) is without doubt one of the documentary
tradition's giants: he played a pivotal role in shaping the film cultures of
Great Britain and Canada, and helped to launch the careers of many important
filmmakers. Nonetheless, scholars are sharply divided about the ultimate
impact of Grierson's legacy. While some rightfully fault him for shying
away from projects that are socially disturbing or politically
uncomfortable, others complain that he helped to establish film cultures
that overvalued documentary films that would reach limited audiences.

We invite proposals on all aspects of the career and legacy of John
Grierson. We particularly encourage proposals on the less studied aspects
of Grierson's work, such as his influence on documentary traditions outside
Britain and Canada; his role in Group 3; and his television series "The
Wonderful World."

Proposals should be in the form of an abstract of no more than 300 words
(including a list of AV equipment needs), and must be submitted by July 20,
2006. Early submissions by email (Word or .rtf attachment) are preferred
and please send as soon as possible.

Send all inquires and proposals to:
