CFP: New Queer Cinema in the 21st Century (4/13/07; MMLA, 11/8/07-11/11/07)full name / name of organization: Jones, David M. contact email: JONESM@uwec.edu CFP: New Queer Cinema in the 21st Century (4/13/07; MMLA; 11/8/07-11/11/07) Midwest Modern Language Association Conference "Coming Out to the Mainstream?: The Mainstreaming of New Queer Cinema in the 21st Century" In the 1990s, "New Queer Cinema" was an emerging radical wave of fiercely political and aesthetic queer films which subverted the mainstream and challenged fixed or conventional depictions of gender and sexuality, such as _Poison_ and _Swoon_. This panel will identify and examine mainstream films of the 21st century that continue the trend of New Queer Cinema and inform the ongoing debate of whether or not New Queer Cinema is dead. What effect has New Queer Cinema had on American cinema since 9/11? Is New Queer Cinema dead, transformed, or resurrected? Has a more sympathetic queer cinema and television diluted the political exigency of New Queer Cinema? Individual papers are encouraged to read a single mainstream film as informing the question of the state of New Queer Cinema, or argue for or against the political urgency of GLBTQ issues present in 21st century mainstream cinema. Please email paper proposals or questions to the panel chair, Joanne Juett, University of ! Dr. David M.
