I am welcoming paper proposals for a panel on literary naturalism and film
adaptation for the American Literature Association Symposium on American
Literary Naturalism to be held at the Hyatt Regency in Newport Beach, CA on
October 5-6, 2007.

Topics can include but are not limited to:

 --film adaptations of naturalist texts, e.g., Erich von Stroheim’s Greed
(1924 adaptation of Frank Norris’s McTeague), Michael Curtiz’s The Sea
Wolf (1941)

 --multiple film adaptations of a naturalist text, e.g., Theodore Dreiser’s
An American Tragedy was the basis for Josef von Sternberg’s An American
Tragedy (1931), George Stevens’s A Place in the Sun (1951), and Lino
Brocka’s Nakaw na pag-ibig (1980)

 --serial adaptations of naturalist texts, e.g., the seven-part series, Jack
London’s Tales of the Fish Patrol (1922-1923)

 --naturalist directors

 --naturalist screenwriters
