Call for Papers
“Writing and Filming the City”

Sixth Biennial Florida International University
Conference on Spanish and Spanish-American Cultural
Studies

March 6-8, 2008

We welcome proposals for papers and panels about the
role played by the city in Peninsular and
Spanish-American literatures and film, although the
conference is open to other literary and cultural
topics as well. The deadline for submission is
December 1st. Suggested topic headings or panel
requests include but are not limited to:

The Utopian City and the Renaissance
The Baroque City
Reading and Writing the City in Peninsular Literature

New Approaches to/from La ciudad letrada
Staging the Metropolis: Theater, Politics and the
City.
Cities and Hispanic Poetry

City and Borderland: Urban Imaginaries in Chicano

Jewish Buenos Aires
City of Prodigies: Barcelona Literature and Film
Madrid, La Movida and the Sublimation of Marginality
Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and Cubans in the Big Apple

Outside City Boundaries: Hispanic Fictions of Suburbia
and Ghettos
Urban Palimpsests and the Politics of Memory
The City and Collective Memory
Urban Space and National Identity
Immigration and the City in the Age of Globalization
City as a Character

Papers may be written in "Spanish or English". Length
should not exceed 10 double-spaced pages (reading
time: 20 minutes). Registration fee is $120. If you
are interested in presenting a paper or in organizing
a session, please E-mail a one-page abstract (250
words) accompanied by a title page with the author’s
name, address and phone no later than December 1st to:
