CFP: [Film] Design and the American Director (8/5/07; SCMS, 3/6/08-3/9/08)
Design and the Contemporay American Director
2008 Society for Cinema and Media Studies
March 6-9, 2008
Summary: This panel will examine the at times overwhelmingly
aestheticized products (cinematic and otherwise) of several
contemporary American filmmakers. A design-forward logic has had an
enormous impact on American culture generally. Our objective will be
to explore the manner by which this pervasive logic has altered
notions of the American director, creating what we might term the
director as designer or, conversely, the “designed†director.
Explorations of auteur-minded DVD packaging, “official†websites, fan-
sites, promotional campaigns, individual films and/or filmmakers that
focus on the breadth of the director’s design aesthetic are
encouraged. Key directors include but are by no means limited to:
Spike Jonze, David Fincher, Wes Anderson, P.T. Anderson, Sofia
Coppola, Michel Gondry.
