Proposed Panel Title: Mug Shots: Criminal Identity and Visual Representation

Panel Summary: From late-nineteenth century phrenology to today’s
cutting-edge forensics, criminological discourses have often relied on
visual imagery to identify and contain the criminal body. This panel will
explore the visual representation of criminality in a variety of media,
considering how such representations shape the public's understanding of
crime and criminal identity. Moreover, this panel hopes to complicate the
notion of criminal representation by questioning what constitutes evidence
and the investigative process, who has the authority to identify the
criminal, and who has access to justice.

Please e-mail inquiries and proposals to April Miller at All proposals must be received by Friday 10 August
2007 and should include an abstract (200-350 words) and a brief bio.
