This is a CFP for a proposed panel at SCMS from March 6-9, 2008.
>From the aperture of the camera obscura to Bruce Nauman’s live-taped video corridors, the
anarchitectural manipulations of space have opened unexpected vistas in the realms of cinema,
media, and the moving image arts. This panel seeks to examine the ways in which
anarchitecture, a term borrowed from the 1973 collective of the same name and the artist
Gordon Matta-Clark, constructs alternative spaces and provokes new visions through a variety of
strategies including the displacement, deformation and détournement of existing structures.
Positioned at the intersection of site and sight, in the “metaphoric voids, gaps, leftover spaces,â€
this panel will not only investigate the effects of space on perception, but also the ways in which
the anarchitectural intervention as such is constituted as a unique form of vision.
We invite a wide range papers that raise theoretical concerns, examine individual case studies, or
otherwise address the negotiations of space and subjectivity in a broader consideration of
anarchitectural practice. We especially encourage work in the areas of avant-garde film and video
Topics may include, but are not limited to:
* The structure of cinematic devices, including cameras and optical toys
* 1970s film and video art; installation and site-specific work
* Situationist formations of space and praxis; the dérive
* The limitations of space in horror survival video games
* The Anarchitecture Group and its legacy
* Alternative or unintended uses of architectural spaces
Please submit a proposal (200-300 words) and brief biography to gyue_at_usc.edu by August 25.
