Call for Papers: Reading Asian Television

The growing cultural significance of Asian television is evident when
looking at the media and popular attention garnered by such phenomenon as
the Korean Wave. This is a call for papers for a collection entitled
Reading Asian Television: Crossing Borders and Breaking Boundaries,
published by I.B. Tauris, and to be edited by Jeongmee Kim. This book is
part of the Reading Television series (series editors: Kim Akass and
Janet McCabe) and aims to examine both the text and context of current
Asian television.

The collection will explore the economic, institutional, historical and
social factors that have shaped current global Asian television culture.
As Asian TV has become so influential and exportable the primary aim of
this book is to offer different approaches to examining the current state
of Asian TV both regionally and internationally. Any articles that will
offer an informative overview of Asian television culture and its
cultural impact in specific countries, in Asia or in the west will be
welcome. We are especially interested in contributions that examine
aspects of television in China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan,
Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and other Asian countries.

Topics will include but are not limited to:

Hallyu (Korean Wave) and its cultural impact
The facilitation of an Asian network within Asia
Regional cooperation in production and distribution
Cultural exchange within Asia
Local audience and regional television
Localization and globalization of Asian television
Local dramas: narrative ideologies and visual styles
Representations of gender and class
Exportability of local television
The re-configuration of local/regional/national/global television

Proposals on subjects outside these areas are welcome.

Please send a proposal (in English) of no more than 500 words with a
title and brief biographical details to Dr. Jeongmee Kim (Manchester
Metropolitan University, j.m.kim_at_mmu.ac.uk). The deadline for proposals
is Thursday 31st January 2008. The editor will contact contributors whose
proposals are accepted by Friday 8th February. Completed first drafts of
around 6,000 words would be expected by mid-May 2008. Please also send
any enquiries to the above email.
