Panel Topic: Dissent in Latin American Representation

Within the humanities, the dissenting subject has given rise to a sizable
outcrop of research, particularly with regard to studies of Latin
American representation. Indeed, many scholars have sought to explain and
recuperate dissident identities through analyses of alterity,
subcultures, subversion and counterpublics. Research about such phenomena
is frequently articulated in terms of communities, the nation-state,
witnessing and subjectivities of gender, race and sexuality, among
others. In this field of work, researchers now consider how these
experiences and identities are narrated in works, such as documentary,
poetry and testimonio.

To examine these matters further, I seek abstracts for SAMLA's 2008
conference at Louisville, KY. In this way, panel presenters are welcome
to interpret the concepts of dissent, identity and nation through
comparative, innovative and interdisciplinary means. Presentations from
all disciplines are welcome. To participate, please send an abstract of
about 500 words and a CV to Electronic
attachments are preferred for submissions. The deadline for abstracts
will be Saturday, March 8th 2008. The conference's plenary speakers will
be H.R. Stoneback and Romulus Linney, and the conference will be held at
the Louisville Hyatt Regency. For more information about SAMLA's
conference, please visit their site: Thank you.
