CFP: “This lady’s not for turning:” New Perspectives on Thatcher and Thatcherism. MLA San
Francisco, 2008. (CFP and collection).

Both loved and reviled while in office, Margaret Thatcher has continued to generate powerful
aftereffects in Britain and abroad more than 20 years after her term as Prime Minister. This panel
is designed to present a new focus on Thatcher, considering her impact both whilst Prime
Minister and since she has left power and both at home and abroad. We hope that this panel will
allow for a fuller assessment of the impact of Margaret Thatcher and the phenomenon of
Thatcherism.

We invite abstracts that either read Thatcher (and Thatcherism) in her moment as Prime Minister
or explore responses to the legacy of Thatcher in the present. We seek papers that examine the
figure of Margaret Thatcher herself, for instance: Thatcher and fashion; Thatcher and gender
politics; representations of Thatcher in literature, politics, art, film and popular culture. In
particular, we are looking for contributions that consider recent and more unconventional
treatments of Thatcher, for example: Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty; Thatcher: The
Musical!; Spitting Image. In addition to Thatcher’s domestic influence, we are also very interested
in papers that explore the global context of Thatcher and Thatcherism: Thatcher and the
Falklands Islands; Thatcher and Reagan; Thatcher and the E.U. Given the broad focus of this
panel however, papers on all topics related to Thatcher and Thatcherism will be considered.

While this CFP is for a proposed special session for this year’s MLA conference, we are also
planning a collected edition of interdisciplinary essays to be entitled Thatcher & After. If you
would like your abstract to be considered for the collected edition as well, please indicate this on
your submission.

Participants must be MLA members by April 1st, 2008.

Please send 500-word abstracts by March 1st, 2008, to Elizabeth Ho and Louisa Hadley at:
(thatcherandafter_at_googlemail.com).
