Friday-Sunday, October 3-5, 2008, Cincinnati, OH
Deadline: May 1, 2008

In "How to Tell a True War Story" Tim O'Brien writes, "You can tell a
true war story by the questions you ask. Somebody tells a story, let's
say, and afterward you ask, 'Is it true?' and if the answer matters,
you've got your answer."

The subject of war raises a wide variety of questions such as the
combat fought, the participants involved, the politics debated, the
public divided, the history written, and the stories overlooked. War
has been a dominant global feature of the last century, and the
current situation in the Middle East only complicates the subject even

I invite proposals to the War area of the Midwest Popular Culture
Association for the 2008 conference to be held October 3-5, 2008, in
Cincinnati, OH. The area is broadly defined, but some possible
subjects include the following:

* Mass media and war
* Women and war
* Autobiography, biography, and war

* History and war
* Orientalism, race/ethnicity, and war
* Construction and destruction of nations
* Trauma and posttraumatic stress disorders

I am particularly interested in proposals about the current conflicts
in the Middle East. In addition, I am also interested in proposals
about the World War II museum and other memorials in the Kansas City
area. Any credible approach to the subject is welcome.

historical foundations; and potential outline for a 15-20 minute
presentation by e-mail to

your presentation, an e-mail and postal address, academic affiliation
