3rd Annual Literature on Screen Conference

Beowulf Adaptations in the Past Two Decades in Texts, Movies and Games

Hillary Fogerty (Missouri Southern State University)

This panel will consider the proliferation of Beowulf adaptations in the
past two decades. While work has been done on medieval texts adapted to
film-for instance Martha Driver and Sid Ray's collection _The Medieval Hero
on Screen_ (2004) or John Aberth's _A Knight at the Movies_ (2003)--the
current popularity of the Beowulf epic calls for renewed attention. Papers
which explore the epic from any angle, whether textual (including
illustrative), cinematic, or as a video game (a genre mentioned, though not
yet fully theorized, in adaptation studies), are encouraged. However,
examinations of Sturla Gunnarsson's _Beowulf and Grendel_ (2005), Robert
Zemeckis' _Beowulf_ (2007), or John Gardner's novel _Grendel_ (1989), would
be especially welcome.
