CFP: [Film] The South in Contemporary Film - Collection (10/1/08; 6/31/09)

This is a call for new essays for an edited collection on representations
of the South and southerners in films produced since 1970. Topics might
include (but are not limited to) southerners “abroad,” “foreigners” in the
South, commercialization of southern culture, issues of authenticity and
exploitation, environment and ecology, complications of traditional
southern images, and developing trends in gender and/or racial
representations. Submissions considering independent or popular films are
welcome. By October 1, 2008, please send 300-500 word abstracts, a short
CV, and contact information via email to Andrew Leiter, Lycoming College,

McFarland Press, a prominent publisher of popular culture and film
studies, has expressed interest in the collection. Pending their approval
of the collection, I have set June 31, 2009, as an anticipated date for
completed individual essays in the 6000-word range. Inquiries are welcome.
