Call for Papers for a Proposed Panel for
SCMS (Society for Cinema and Media Studies) 2007 Conference
Chicago, IL, March 8-11, 2007

Since its inception, television has functioned as a battleground between
"high" and "low" culture, sometimes derided as a "vast wasteland," other
times championed for heralding a public media revolution by illustrating
that everyone can find their place on and through the small screen.
This panel, however, will take a step back from the political arguments
about television's position in the cultural and social economy in order
to focus on a more personal relationship-that between television and its
viewer(s).

Science Fictions Studies invites proposals for a special issue on The Animal, exploring the variety of ways that science fiction may be analysed from the perspective of animal studies. Animals are among the oldest metaphors through which humanity has defined itself. We welcome both papers that deal with representations of animals and the metaphorical use of the category of speciesism to enforce social boundaries and establish a humanist subject, and also papers that consider our changing material relationships with animals as they are mediated by changing technologies.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Words and Notes in the Nineteenth Century (London, 2-3 July 2007)

Focusing on a century that fostered a growth industry in musical writing
of many kinds (musical novels, programme notes, musical poetry, music
appreciation texts, journalism, scientific treatises, biography, etc.),
this conference seeks to address three main questions. How is music
conceptualized in various textual situations/locations between c.1789 and
1914? How can we best approach the relationships between music and texts?
In what ways might comparative study of different languages, genres or
cultural contexts help us explore the workings of word-music
relationships?
