Associate Editors
Why do we do what we do in the field of literary studies? Why does it matter? To whom? What redemptive or transformative work does literature do? When? Where? How? We invite reflection and conversation about the different kinds of work literature does to and through writers, readers, teachers, thinkers, and scholars. Our topic is intentionally broad as we seek to inspire, encourage, and celebrate the creation, interpretation, and appreciation of literature from any historical period and any genre. Our format is inclusive with panels for professors, graduate and undergraduate students, as well as scholars from multiple disciplines including English, Modern Languages, Theology, Education, Psychology, Science, and Humanities.
Call for Papers: Special Issue of Dickens Quarterly
“Dickens and His Publics”
This Special Issue of Dickens Quarterly, projected for March 2024, opens the pages of the journal to all of Dickens’s publics—that is, to the many different kinds of readers and writers who engage meaningfully with Charles Dickens.
What do the words “Arab” and “Arabic” mean today? What have they meant historically? What continuities and ruptures do they signify in contemporary discourses of the Middle East? In a world in which conflict, migration, transnational movements, the blurring of borders, and (self-)translation have become everyday realities for millions of Arabs, these questions have attained new urgency. In this seminar, we explore the relationship between the Arabic language and Arab identity and community in the transnational contexts that have long defined both.
2023 ACLA CFP: Cybernetic Poetics and New Approaches to Understanding Literature
We are organizing a seminar called “Cybernetic Poetics and New Approaches to Understanding Literature” for the 2023 American Comparative Literature Association annual meeting, which will take place in Chicago March 16-19, 2023. In conceptualizing nationalism and “nation-ness,” Benedict Anderson considered not only their emergence and historical transformations but also “why […] they command such profound emotional legitimacy” (Anderson 2006, 4). Intrinsic to the widely accepted understanding of the nation as a politically powerful construct is its affective depth, which shapes the atmospheres, spaces, bodies, and relations of national life.
The People, Planet and Prosperity for a Sustainable Future Conference will bring together international researchers and educators from multiple disciplines to examine and discuss methods, applications, theories, ideas and practices intended to insure the flourishing of all persons and communities with a focus on underserved, underprivileged and economically disadvantaged populations.

We are seeking chapter submissions for an edited anthology on Anne Brontë and the question of female artistry. Though interest and scholarship in Anne has grown in recent years, the youngest Brontë sister is still the least known and researched. Her bicentennial in 2020 was interrupted by the pandemic, and so there was not the same celebration and promotion of her life and work as her sisters.
This anthology seeks chapters on the question of female artistry as it relates to Anne’s life and work. Topics may include (but are not limited to):

Routledge Encyclopedia of Chinese Studies is an ongoing project and part of the Routledge Resources Online with the first series of articles scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2023.
Over the past two decades, several institutions have emerged that collect, preserve, and make available for study obsolete media-technological artifacts and apparatuses: the Media Archaeological Fundus at Humboldt University, the online Museum of Obsolete Media, and the Media Archaeology Lab at CU Boulder are only a few of the most prominent examples.
