In a period of tumultuous changes like the ones brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, the rise of far-right governments, racism, and international tensions caused by the war in Ukraine and Gaza, a great reckoning is happening in the Western cultural context, especially with regard to the Atlantic and Transatlantic world. No nation has undergone more rapid and sometimes contradictory transformations than the US, showing tensions between its foundational narratives and counternarratives rising from its too often neglected socio-cultural realities. Culturally embedded American ideals have always emphasized a single unifying narrative capable of synthesizing the plurality of voices on US soil.

We are inviting proposals for 20-minute conference papers on the Hulu Adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood’s famous 1985 dystopia. The novel was published during Ronald Reagan’s troubled presidency, which witnessed second-wave feminism, anti-pornography, pro-life and pro-legal abortion campaigns, but the first season of the adaptation was likewise released during troubled times, a few months after the controversial election of Donald Trump as the 50th President of the USA, which created an equally tense political scene. Women across the world were protesting for female and human rights, often dressed in the now iconic Handmaid’s costume.

In the Anthropocene era, the pace of human development outpaces that of natural evolution, disrupting ecological balance and transforming humans into a potent geological force. Frequently, humans reduce the complexity of other life forms or natural entities on the planet, treating them as mere kinds of resources or energy used by humans without adequate consideration for the future. This perceived human superiority creates a dichotomy between humans and non-humans, further influencing knowledge production dynamics. However, the boundaries between nature and culture have been blurred because of the advancement in science and technology, and nature is not something out there, as a negligible externality.

Moving from silence into speech is for the oppressed, the colonized, the exploited, and those who stand and struggle side by side, a gesture of defiance that heals, that makes new life, and new growth possible. It is that act of speech, of “talking back” that is no mere gesture of empty words, that is the expression of moving from object to subject, that is the liberated voice.’
