SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY AND MEDIA; OH MY! (05/31/06; World Science
Fiction Convention; 8/23/06 â€" 8/26/06)

The World Science Fiction Society is currently inviting papers for the
academic track of the 2006 World Science Fiction Convention, otherwise
known as Worldcon. This year’s Worldcon will be held in Los Angeles,
California at the Anaheim Convention Center from Wednesday August 23 -
Sunday August 27 and is called L.A.con IV.

Submissions are invited for a collection of essays analyzing the novels =
=3D
and short stories of black British author Zadie Smith. The main focus of =
=3D
the collection will be to explore the various ways Smith approaches =3D
issues of race, identity, and post colonialism.=3D20

Suggested topics for discussion include:

Black British/British identity in a global community

Exploring Biracial identity in a British context

Interracial relationships

The utopian view of "race mixing"

A comparative view of post colonialism: immigrant vs. British born =3D
children

Cultural alienation and displacement

The purpose of this panel is to bring two interdisciplinary fields (Disability Studies
and Modern & Contemporary Poetics) into conversation, putting pressure on emerging
terminology in these fields, with a view toward imagining a "post-ableist poetics."

Refashioning the Self: Authorial Construction in Autobiographical Writing

Abstracts are invited for a proposed special session at the annual Modern
Language Association Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 27-30
December 2006.

This session, pending approval of the MLA program committee, will examine
how authors write about themselves in various contexts. Papers may explore
authorial self-reflexivity in novels, poetry, diaries, letters, or other
contexts such as e-mail or speeches. The session will address such

titled 'Shopping for Jesus!: Religion as Commodity'. The aim of this is
to explore the connections between belief, its presentation, and the
processes by which it is sold and consumed. I want to think about the
way in which religion operates in a market culture and the degree to
which one can use the notions of branding, advertising and marketing to
understand missionary and revival activities. Conversely, one might ask
whether religious methods of self-promotion underlay the development of
some of the techniques of private enterprise. I am interested in papers
that explore such themes from a range of locations in time, space and
