Society for Science, Literature, and the Arts is ready for boarding now:

Crossing the Line Between Public and Private in Early Modern England. I am inviting papers for a panel on issues of privacy in Early Modern England for the Cultural Studies Conference at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS March 9-11, 2006. The topic is broad and may include (but is not limited to) issues such as: the private/public nature of coterie literature, government surveillance and the limits of personal privacy, public performances of private concerns, the inversion of private and public in royal spectacle, and private writing in a public setting. The realm of the ghostly has figured as a repeated referent in histories =

war and conflict - from the pre-modern practice of invoking ghosts and
spirits to assist in combat, to notions of the ghosts of dead soldiers =
and
citizens haunting battlefields and sites of destruction, to the =
portrayal of
Al Qaeda as constituting a type of 'phantom enemy'.
