"The Renaissance Unconscious"

This colloquium will set out to explore concepts such as "inwardness",
"repression", and "sublimation" in the context of Renaissance writing.

Colloquium B (13 May 2006)

"Forgery, Authority, and Authenticity in the Renaissance"

The colloquium will explore the ideas of forgery and authenticity in the
Renaissance (whether of documents, texts, objects, images, or ideas).

Antigone's Transformation: Modern Interpretations of the Classic Figure

Antigone is a figure of fascination. She has captured the attention of great
critical minds such as Hegel, Heidegger, Irigaray, and Butler; playwrights
continue to offer new ways of interpreting her actions. Why the continued
interest in Antigone's story? What are we to make of the newer, more modern
translations of Sophocles's original? How are we to interact with the mass
of critical scholarship written about Antigone?

In her contribution to Richard Dyer's Now You See It (2nd edition, 2003), Julianne Pidduck remarks that 'contemporary queer works are increasingly entering into mainstream culture' and that 'we now find ourselves in a cultural moment of 'hypervisibility''. It is precisely such increased exposure in contemporary cinema that this bilingual, single-track conference aims to map, analyse, and discuss.

The UC Davis Medieval Research Consortium invites abstracts of 20-minute
papers for the following sponsored sessions:

1) A session on "Potions and Charms: Artifice and Manipulation" which
addresses the role of magical implements by exploring their manipulation
as both a rhetorical and a creative force in several medieval texts.

Plenary Speaker this year will be Brian Copenhaver, Professor of Philosophy
at UCLA.

CALL FOR PAPERS:

Papers are invited for submission for a panel on Representing Black Europe in
Cinema at the upcoming Modern Language Association (North East) conference in
Philadelphia, March 2-5, 2006. This panel will explore the Black American
presence in European cinema and Black Europeans in film, contrasting the
representation of the American expatriate experience with the representation of
Black communities in Europe.
