Roundtable: Richard Wright’s Place in the Canon
As a sport, basketball follows a certain set of rules and conventions which serve as a framework for players, coaches, and teams to play the sport. By their very nature, these rules are meritocratic which means that all participants are equal on the court, play by the same rules, and the only relevant (read as: game deciding) factors are effort, skill, and fortune. Such a perspective on basketball and sports leads certain fans and observers to statements such as “politics should be kept out of sports”.

Ecopedagogies and Hispanic Studies:
Knowledge and Skills for the Anthropocene

While traditional pedagogies have contributed to what Rob Nixon has called the two defining crises of the 21st century: catastrophic climate change and widening global disparity, the emergence of critical pedagogies and environmental humanities has brought new ways for curricular innovation.
Often drawing from religious mythology, fantastic literature has been intricately linked to religious themes since before the mid-twentieth century, when Lewis wrote The Chronicles of Narnia, a religious allegory (although he insisted that it was not), and Tolkien formulated his understanding of fantasy as a sub-creation. In His Dark Materials (1995-2000), Philip Pullman creates a New Eve and imagines a frail deity no longer in control. A myriad of fantastic fiction — such as Terry Pratchett's Hogfather (1996) and Neil Gaiman's American Gods (2001) — also looks at the displacement or immigration of old gods as well as the creation of new ones.
There have been several recent studies of literary writing as something that crosses between secular artistry and religious practice, for example Kyle Garton-Gundling’s Enlightened Individualism: Buddhism and Hinduism in American Literature from the Beats to the Present and Avram Alpert’s A Partial Enlightenment: What Modern Literature and Buddhism Can Teach Us About Living Well Without Perfection. The writers who are discussed in relation to Buddhism and other religions spreading from Asia to the West has increased since the Beats were the “usual suspects,” but it was surprising that Buddhism was rarely mentioned in the recent obituaries of bell hooks.
Please consider applying to the forthcoming National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar for College and University Teachers on continuity and change in the production, dissemination, and reading of Western European books during the 200 years following the advent of printing with movable type. The seminar will pose the governing question of whether the advent of printing was a necessary precondition for the Protestant Reformation. Participants will consider ways in which elements such as book layout, typography, illustration, and paratext (e.g., prefaces, glosses, and commentaries) shaped the responses of readers.

Documenting the Author: Examining the Role of and Impact of Author-Based Documentaries
This past April, the highly anticipated documentary, Hemingway (2021), premiered on PBS, coupled with watch parties and much discussion of reactions to the film. The reception of the documentary spurred debate, provided new perspectives of Hemingway through visual footage and images, and perhaps most importantly, presented the author’s life and work to a public audience, inviting both casual and dedicated readers to watch and learn.

Disability and Trauma in the Life and Works of Ernest Hemingway
Process: Journal of Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Scholarship invites submissions for Issue 6.2, On Apathy. For this issue, we seek thought-provoking, critical work from a range of disciplines and perspectives. Approaches to the topic might consider but are not limited to:
Social, emotional, mental, and/or physical fatigue/burnout
Desire to detach from reality
Lack of emotional engagement and motivation
Relationships to “The Great Resignation”
COVID apathy/vaccine apathy
Apathy standing in the way of institutional change
Apathy precluding social change
The horror genre in film follows from the literary tradition established by Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley, eliciting physiological and psychological reactions through suspense, gore, the macabre and the supernatural. Horror films transfix and terrify audiences in equal measure, unfailingly achieving suspension of disbelief because fear is a universal emotion. The position occupied by female characters in horror cinema is often ambivalent, ranging from victims of violence to perpetrators of dread. Relying in part on Julia Kristeva's theory of abjection, we will investigate representations of decaying female bodies in cinema. Kristeva defines horror as a breakdown in meaning caused by the loss of boundaries between self and other.
The theme of Critical Orwell: an online conference (12-14 April 2022) is how Orwell is critical and in crisis: how Orwell’s views and work matter; how Orwell operated as a judge and fault-finder, and occasionally as a pessimist; and how Orwell is a figure whose prejudices raise important questions about his canonical status in Anglo-American culture and beyond. How and why is Orwell critical now?

What is the continued role of feminist theory and feminist analysis in literary studies today in these lands claimed by Canada? How and why is feminist analysis still relevant to our work? We seek contributions for a special issue of Canadian Literature on feminist critique and/in Canada today.
The 1st Conference on Posthumanism and the Ecological Crisis organized by the Department of English & Literary Studies, Brainware University will be held on January 29, 2022.
