One of the US’s most famous and beloved independent bookstores, City Lights celebrates its 70 birthday this year while we gather for MLA. This special session, a joint venture between the LLC Italian-American and the Allied Organization Italian American Studies Association, celebrates City Lights focusing on book cultures and print communities.

An unprecedented wave of literary prizes were awarded to African writers in the past year. These include awards for Abdulrazakh Gurnah (Nobel), Boubacar Boris Diop (Neustadt), David Diop (Man-Booker), Mohamed Mbougar Sarr (Goncourt) and Damon Galgut (Booker). This roundtable brings together scholars of African literatures and francophone studies to respond to these recent developments and reflect critically on what these awards mean for the field. Potential topics might include situating 2021 against other historical arcs of consecration in African literatures or how this recent wave relates to questions of genre, gender, and language of expression.

Università del Piemonte Orientale (Vercelli, Italy) invites paper proposals for a conference exploring the routes and branches of literary and cultural exchanges from Italy to the United States in the years 1945-1975. The conference is the third in a series of events taking place within the framework of the transdisciplinary research project Transatlantic Transfers: the Italian presence in Postwar America 1949-1972 (PRIN 2017, 2020-23) developed in partnership with Politecnico di Milano, Università degli Studi Roma Tre, and Università di Scien-ze Gastronomiche di Pollenzo.

Types of Manuscripts
The Arkansas Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts (ACTELA) seeks a variety of submissions based on the issue theme. Submissions must be original, previously unpublished work.

Simon Gaunt’s research interests were remarkably varied: from Romance philology to psychoanalysis, postcolonial studies, and beyond. This panel honors one important part of his legacy: his groundbreaking feminist and queer readings of medieval literature. Two of his monographs stand out in this regard. The influential Gender and Genre in Medieval French Literature (1995)offers a remarkably broad map of the ways whereby different genres—chansons de geste, romance, troubadour lyrics, hagiography, and fabliaux—both construe and trouble notions of masculinity and femininity. Love and Death in Medieval French and Occitan Literature: Martyrs to Love (2006) is concerned with the interplay of death and desire in courtly texts.

This symposium, organised by WomenTalkPlace and supported by the Centre for Place Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University, will provide a platform for conversations between those who find inspiration from their environment, whether that be the countryside, the city, or the places in between. The relationship with place might inspire acts of creativity, philosophical debate, or be a guide for day-to-day living. Sometimes this might engender a feeling of connection, but also less comfortable and more problematic responses.
