This year’s Thatcher Network conference invites papers which consider the role that members of Margaret Thatcher’s cabinets played in shaping and delivering ‘Thatcherism’.
The conference, and the book project that will follow, will look beyond Thatcher as the dominant political figure of the 1980s and consider the significance of key ministers, like Michael Heseltine, Geoffrey Howe and Keith Joseph.

A new book series has been established by Routledge, with a focus on popular culture.
The Routledge Advances in Popular Culture Studies series is looking for original and interdisciplinary monographs or edited volumes, which expand our understanding of popular culture as reflecting world challenges, contexts, and situations. The Series places a particular emphasis on evolutions and transformations within popular culture — with a focus on icons, narratives, practices, and identities — and aims to provide interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transmedia perspectives.
The editor of the series welcomes proposals for projects on a wide range of topics, including (but not limited to):
In recent years, growing numbers of humanists and social scientists have asked how societies provision basic amenities like potable water, waste disposal, rapid transit, and telecommunications. The resulting field of infrastructure studies extends critical attention to the environments we manufacture to gratify material need on a mass scale. Our special issue will consider what eighteenth-century studies brings to a multidisciplinary conversation that usually restricts its focus to the present.
This MLA 2023 panel invites papers that explore artistic responses to the pandemic, both in its global and localized dimensions, with a focus on experimental art. Send 200-word abstracts and bio to Camelia Raghinaru, Concordia U. Irvine (camelia.raghinaru@cui.edu) by Tuesday, 15 March 2022. The starting point for this call for papers is the Cinema-19 project (https://vimeo.com/437355512), which offers an aesthetic/experimental response to the pandemic.
Papers: Explorations into Children's Literature journal is open now for new submissions. We welcome submission of research articles or critical reflections on creative writing and processes that explore creativity, the nature and processes of writing, or investigation of issues in writing for children and young people. Papers is a free, open-access online journal publishing critical research into children’s literature. Papers is fully-refereed and all submissions undergo a double-blind reviewing process by members of the journal’s international reviewing board. While the editors welcome articles on Australasian material, we do not limit Papers to articles only on Australasian works, or by Australasian scholars.
In 2004, Bruno Latour published his seminal essay “Why Has Critique Run Out of Steam: Turning from Matters of Fact to Matters of Concern.” In the nearly twenty years following, there have been several literary scholars who have ruminated on this topic. We have since seen a rise of close reading (Heather Love, Sharon Marcus, S. Best) methodologies and theoretical frames regarding the usefulness (Rita Felski, 2008 and Sara Ahmed) of literature and literary studies. Yet, we still seem to be asking if what we do matters.

Modernity is a cracked looking-glass, a double-edged sword. Michel Foucault describes modernity as a period acutely aware of itself as modern, determinedly engaged in reflecting on what it means to be of the moment, and self-consciously focused on presenting itself as new. But as Kirby Brown (Cherokee Nation) reminds us, formulations of the modern are equally formulations of the non-modern, since there is ‘no civilization without the savage, no modernity without the primitive, no modernism without tradition (or convention), no modern subject without its cultural, racial, temporal, geographic, and historical Other.
How has the pandemic permanently changed your teaching? How are we permanently changed as educators? This session addresses how teaching through the pandemic has changed scholars’ professional practices, pedagogies, or epistemologies.
Please submit 250-500w abstract and a brief bio via email.
This guaranteed session for the 2023 Modern Language Association Convention is sponsored by the HEP Teaching as a Profession Forum Executive Committee. Accepted papers are guaranteed inclusion on the MLA 2023 program. If accepted, you must be or become an MLA member by April 1, 2022.

The fortieth annual conference of the Association for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies in Canada (AASSC) will be held virtually from Monday, May 16–Thursday, May 19, 2022.
Virtual conference: After much deliberation, due to the uncertainty of ongoing and changing health restrictions, the AASSC executive has decided to again hold our 2022 conference online. Furthermore, it will take place independently of Congress 2022, which is also being held exclusively online. Women’s Writing and their Writings on Writing
The area of research delineated under the seminar Women Writers and their Writings on Writing is that of women novelists having inscribed their fictional and non-fictional contributions in English within the frame of postmodernism. Simultaneously using and abusing the canon, writers like Margaret Atwood, Antonia Susan Byatt, Ursula Le Guin, Doris Lessing, or Angela Carter, to name but a few, make their voices heard via metafiction, literary theory and criticism, newspaper articles, reviews, lectures and recorded/televised interviews – demarches which are quintessentially technical, therefore automatically/stereotypically associated with men.
Queerness has been represented on film, in varying ways, from the advent of motion pictures to the present day. This special issue of the academic journal Queer Studies in Media & Popular Culture will explore the forms and functions of groundbreaking queer cinema in the early decades of the 21st century. Completed articles on any topic pertaining to contemporary cinema studies at the intersection of gender/sexuality studies and/or queer theory are invited from established and emerging scholars of various disciplines.
