Twenty years after the term "postmodernism" became common currency in
analyses of contemporary literature, architecture, visual arts,
philosophy and popular culture, we still find the editor of the recent
Cambridge Companion to Postmodernism (2004) lamenting "the strange
absence of a mature postmodernist discourse within music studies," and
suggesting that "the relative conservatism and autonomy of the world of
academic music study may account for its long resistance to
postmodernist formulations and arguments."

Hybridized Identities

Iris Murdoch’s Scenes: An Anthology of Moral Imaginations

In this age of the Ethical Turn, considerations of Iris Murdoch’s work as
philosopher and novelist may be more important than ever. Her philosophical
influences and encounters, her vast literary production, her flashing insights
in interviews, all kept close faith with the value and mystery of the limited,
often eccentric, individual other and the difficult work of responsibly
encountering reality. As the Humanities engage with questions from the
geopolitical to the personal regarding the other, Iris Murdoch’s work presents one
model worthy of emulation, question, and adaptation to the concerns we face in
our present contexts.

We have updated the following CFP to include a call for creative writers =
to submit their work.

Call for abstracts for the SCMLA's annual Bibliography and Textual
Criticism panel. The 2006 conference is in Ft. Worth, TX, and this year's
theme is "Textual Theory and Popular Culture." The chair is interested in
any papers that consider methodologies for theorizing the textual and
bibliographical aspects of works of popular culture--especially in terms of
such textual artifacts as film, television, and music.
