_'Queering Migrations on Screen'_
A one-day conference, to be held at the Institute of Germanic & Romance
Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London
*Date: **Friday 13 October 2006***
The aim of this conference is to look at the phenomenon of migration in
a range of national cinemas from the perspective of queer theory.
Call for Magnetic Fields Papers:
Scholarly articles interpreting the lyrics of songs by The Magnetic Fields
desired for a book.
Each paper should be between 2000 and 5000 words.

Articles should interpret lyrics in depth. An entire paper about one song
would be excellent or a paper about four songs in conjunction. Papers that
cover more than 5 songs should display overall comprehensive knowledge of
the Magnetic Fields. It is important that each paper cover any literary
references in the songs being discussed.

CALL FOR PAPERS: MHRA Working Papers in the Humanities
Annual Convention of the Midwest Modern Language Association, November 9-12,
2006 in Chicago, Illinois.
In keeping with the informal theme of this year's MMLA conference ("High &
Low Culture"), we are seeking submissions for a proposed special section
entitled "Highbrow and Low-down: The Novels of Ishmael Reed." This special
session will not only explore various ways in which Reed's novels appear to
disregard traditional divisions between "high" and "low" culture, but also
ways in which these novels fashion cultural critique from the detritus of
popular culture.

Commentators such as Gerald Graff and Mark Jancovich have noted that, since
the demise in the 1960s of the New Critical hegemony, contemporary critical
discourse has often promoted misunderstandings of New Critical projects.
The image of the New Criticism as ahistorical formalism, they suggest,
misrepresents the New Critics' commitment to practices and epistemologies
distinctive to literature; their engagement with social and historical
issues; and their cultural politics. These recent critiques encourage
rereading the work of the New Critics from a new perspective-one that
maintains critical distance on received ideas about their methods.

Conference that will be held in Baltimore, MD. Non-members can still
join, though at a higher rate (see

you need:
- a panel title
- a 250-500 word abstract
- a maximum 100-word descriptions
Once approved, you will have until Sept. 15, 2006 to collect abstracts.
