Panel Title: The End of Tolerance?

As the new century began, 'tolerance' was supposed to pour healing oil on
American waters and enable some ground for a universal moral commitment. In
Europe, it was believed that the emergence of the European Union and the
"European Dream" would enable a culture of tolerance and a kindly
integration of The Other.

CFP: Edith Wharton and the Material Cultures of the Book edited collection:
deadlines extended (abstracts, 1 October 2006; contributions, 1 April 2007).

Contributors are encouraged to interpret the idea of the material culture of
the book as widely as they wish, drawing upon research from sociology,
economic and social history, literary theory, bibliography, book history,
philosophy and anthropology. I would particularly welcome contributors seeking to
examine Wharton’s publication, production, dissemination and place in book
history and material culture outside of an American context. Some topics that you
might wish to discuss include:

The Ninth International F. Scott Fitzgerald Conference will
be held in London, from 8 through 14 July 2007. Senate
House, near Russell Square in Bloomsbury, will be the
conference center where panels and plenary sessions will be
held.

Proposals are invited on any aspect of Fitzgerald studies.
We would, however, particularly welcome such subjects as
Fitzgerald’s reputation in England, the influence of British
writers on his work, including Keats, Conrad, and the
Victorian novelists, and British writers of the 1920s whom
Fitzgerald admired.

Complexity Studies (dealing with emergence, cultural complexity, =
protocol, control, information, technology, network theory) in their =
analysis of mediated texts. Of particular interest are papers which =
address the role of complexity and cultural artifacts in relation to =
multiculturalism, nationalism, transnationalism, postcolonialism, or =
identity politics, as manifest withinin (or in relation to) the public =
sphere.
